BOOK REPORT FOR A NONFICTION INFORMATIONAL BOOK
book title: A Child Called “It” 160 pages
Author: Dave Pelzer
Publisher: Health Communications Inc.
This book is a memoir about Dave Pelzer when he was a kid, and his abusive mother.
I selected this book because it looked interesting that the kid had an abusive mother. By reading the first page, I noticed this book had a lot of action. I thought it seemed dramatic how his mother would slap Dave.
The authors purpose for writing this book were to tell his readers about his abusive childhood, and how he eventually was free when he was placed in custody of the Daly Smith Police Department.
In the first chapter, the book shows what happens around when Dave is in custody of the Daly Smith Police Department, and when a policeman brings him to his new home. (all the things in the rest of the book, except the epilogue, happen before) This is interesting because Dave was finally free.
David used to steal food from other kids lunches and a store nearby because his mother usually didn’t feed him unless he cleaned the dishes in 20 minutes. This is interesting because it was sad that his mother usually didn’t give him food.
I like how David used to have to mow lawns for his mother because his mother wouldn’t beat him when he was mowing lawns.
In the epilogue, it shows that Dave has a peaceful life as an adult with his son. I like this because it shows that Dave eventually has a good life.
When Dave was very young and before his mother abused him, he used to go on many trips with his mom, dad, and brother, such as going to the Russian River.
(What did you learn from this book?)
David smelled bad. All the students would plug their noses.
Child abuse is a serious problem.
Millions of dollars are sent to juvenile halls and foster homes.
1 in 5 children are abused.
There are private organizations for basic child abuse prevention.
The general public doesn’t know of the extent of child abuse.
(If you were to meet the author, what would you tell/ask him?)
I would tell the author that he should have made the book longer. I would like to see what happens next.
I would tell him that he should have more information in the prologue of this book.
(Would you recommend this book to others?)
No, because this book is sad and not good for sensitive people to read.
